Abstract

Urdu journalism has not only played a significant role in the independence movement of the sub-continent but also played a very vital role in spreading information and education in Pakistani society during the last 70 years. Urdu journalism had a strong relationship with Urdu literature because most of the journalists of earlier times were writers and poets. Therefore the newspapers were having a high standard of language and grammar. But gradually, the standard of Urdu newspapers started to deteriorate with the passage of time. Today it has become more and more worsened. Now, journalists and literary people have separated their paths which resulted into decline in the standard of the language. This paper attempts to investigate the linguistic errors and grammar mistakes in Urdu newspapers of the modern times. The results indicate that the most of the top Urdu newspapers are publishing a significant number of news stories with language errors and grammatical mistakes resulting into decline of the journalistic standard of today’s Urdu newspapers. There is a great need for the Urdu newspapers to focus on professional training of journalists to improve their language skills. Journalists should also develop habit to read Urdu literature to improve their wring skills.
