Abstract

The Urdu drama began in the era of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in 1853. It is said that the first Urdu drama was "Inder Sabha" which was written by Amanat Lakhnavi. Afterwards, Imtiaz Ali Taj and Agha Hashar Kashmiri added prominent dramas in Urdu literature. Later radio and television dramas captured the people’s hearts and minds in their magic. Produced under the direction of Fazal Kamal, Pakistan Television’s first on-air drama was "Nazrana". Its script was penned by Najma Farooqi. Soon after this, watching television drama became a part of our society. Shaukat Siddiqui, Fatima Surayya Bajia, Hassena Moin, Amjad Islam Amjad, Asghar Nadeem Syed and Noor-ul-Huda Shah and their plays such as Khudaki Basti, Tanhaiyan, Waris, Chand Girhan and Marvigreatly influenced the viewers mind and soul in such a way that people still remember their dialogues.

In the year 2000 private television channels started their transmissions in Pakistan and their on-air television dramas started appearing on regular basis. As compared to PTV their content was not as good but they produced some remarkable drama series. If we observe these dramas as a general audience we come to know about the fact that today the drama’s industry content is harming our social norms and is full of cliché.

It is in view of this situation that this study has been conducted. For improvement of drama stories, presentation of characters and acting skills, opinion of TV drama viewers have been gathered through an well-organized survey method. Views of notable people from the drama industry are also included in this paper.
