Abstract

This research paper offers a concise critical study of devotional poetry centered on the Ahl al-Bayt in the Urdu literary tradition of Baltistan. It examines major classical genres such as marsiya, noha, salaam, manqabat, and mukhammas, as practiced by notable poets including Ghulam Hassan Hassani, Fida Hussain Shameem, Syed Mahdi Sarbaz, and Ghulam Hussain Saleem. The study highlights how themes of Karbala, reverence for the Ahl al-Bayt, and spiritual resistance are artistically expressed through religious symbolism and classical poetic techniques. It also notes that while genres like manqabat and salaam remained prominent, mukhammas appeared less frequently yet retained literary importance. The paper concludes that Baltistan’s devotional poetry represents both deep religious sentiment and a significant, though underexplored, contribution to regional Urdu literature.
