Abstract

This paper offers a concise linguistic study of negation prefixes in Urdu, analyzing their morphology, origins, and semantic roles. It focuses on common negative prefixes like a-, an-, ni-, nā-, be-, lā-, and ghair-, tracing their roots to Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, and Prakrit. The study also examines independent negative particles like nahi, na, mat, and hāshā in syntactic and pragmatic contexts. It highlights Urdu’s hybrid morphological structure and its integration of diverse linguistic influences in forming negation.
