Abstract

Dr Ghulam Mustafa Khan (23 September 1912 – 25 September 2005) was an eminent scholar, researcher, literary critic, linguist, author, educationist, and religious as well as spiritual leader of high order. He Belonged to Naqshbandi order of Sufism. He was born in Jabalpur, India on 23 September 1912. In 1928 he finished his ninth grade from Jabalpur and went to Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh for the rest of his education. He received his higher education at the Aligarh Muslim University. He held the degrees of LLB and M.A. in Urdu literature & M.A in Persian. He completed his PhD in 1947 and his topic was related with the studies of Syed Ashruddin Hassan Ghaznavi a renowned 12th-century Persian poet. In 1959, he was awarded D.Litt. by Nagpur University, India. Early in his teaching career, he was appointed as a lecturer at the King Edward College, Amrawati and after migration to Pakistan from India he was appointed in Urdu College, Karachi. Later in his life, he also performed the duties as the head of the department of Urdu in University of Sindh. For his academic services he was honoured with various awards including the Naqoosh Award, Iqbal Award and Nishan-i-Sipas. The addressee of the following letters of Dr. Ghulam Mustafa Khan is Dr. Moinuddin Aqeel who is a renowned scholar of Urdu and history especially the history and culture of Muslims of South Asia. He has published almost 85 scholarly books and more than 300 research articles on the subjects of his interests. He has been affiliated with University of Karachi, International Islamic University, Islamabad, Oriental University, Naples, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Osaka University, Daito Bunka University, and Kyoto University. He has taught and supervised researches in the field of the history and culture of Pakistan and Urdu language and literature.

In this article, 12 of his letters are presented with brief biography and necessary annotations which Dr. Ghulam Mustafa Khan has written to Dr. Moinuddin Aqeel. These letters highlight his scholarship, research activities as well as various aspects of his personality. These letters also highlight issues of mutual interest such as research and book friendship between the two scholars.
