Abstract

Essay as genre started its journey from English and than came into Urdu. In Europe Joseph Addison and Richard Steele worked for the popularity of it through their esteem journals Spectator and Tatler. In Urdu Master Ram Chandra is considered to be the founder of it. He launched a journal “Fawaid u Nazreen” in which he published articles on different aspects of life. We can’t say that these articles are literary essays because these are focused on morality. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan also started a journal “Tehzeeb ul Akhlaq”on the Pattern of Spectator but he focused all aspects of Muslim’s life of Subcontinent which includes Moral values, civilization, religion and literature. We can say that He is the real founder of literary essay in Urdu. This article is subjective, stylistic and analytical study of Sir Syed’s Essays.
