منتخب اردو لغات کا اجمالی جائزہ

Abstract

This study presents a historical and analytical overview of selected Urdu dictionaries, tracing the evolution of Urdu lexicography from its early rudimentary forms to modern academic and scholarly standards. Rather than covering the entire corpus of Urdu dictionaries, the study focuses on selected and significant works representing major stages in the historical development of Urdu lexicography. The compilation of Urdu dictionaries initially began with bilingual glossaries prepared to facilitate Persian and Arabic scholars and learners, gradually developing into monolingual works that contributed significantly to the standardization of Urdu orthography, phonology, and semantic structures. The major milestones in this evolution include the pioneering efforts of European orientalists as well as the valuable contributions of native scholars. Particular attention is given to selected landmark works, especially Farhang-e-Asifiya by Syed Ahmed Dehlvi and Noor-ul-Lughaat by Noor-ul-Hasan Nayyar, which played a significant role in the development of classical Urdu lexicography. The study also highlights the important contribution of the Urdu Dictionary Board, Karachi, particularly its 22-volume Urdu Lughat (Tarikhi Usool Par), a monumental compilation based on historical principles and a significant achievement in the scholarly tradition of Urdu lexicography.

یہ تحقیقی مطالعہ منتخب اردو لغات کا ایک تاریخی اور تجزیاتی جائزہ پیش کرتا ہے، جس میں اردو لغت نویسی کے ارتقا کو اس کی ابتدائی سادہ صورتوں سے لے کر جدید تعلیمی و تحقیقی معیارات تک پہنچنے کے مختلف مراحل کی روشنی میں بیان کیا گیا ہے۔ مطالعے میں اردو لغت نویسی کی تاریخ کے اہم ادوار سے تعلق رکھنے والی منتخب لغات کو موضوعِ بحث بنایا گیا ہے۔ اردو لغات کی تیاری کا آغاز ان دو لسانی فرہنگوں سے ہوا جو فارسی اور عربی کے ماہرین کی سہولت کے لیے مرتب کی گئی تھیں۔ بعد ازاں یک لسانی لغات کی تدوین کا سلسلہ فروغ پایا، جس نے اردو زبان کے املا، صوتیات اور معنیاتی ڈھانچے کو مستحکم کرنے میں اہم کردار ادا کیا۔ اس ارتقائی سفر کے نمایاں سنگِ میلوں میں یورپی مستشرقین کی ابتدائی لغوی کاوشیں اور مقامی اہلِ علم و ادب کی گراں قدر خدمات شامل ہیں۔ اس مقالے میں منتخب اہم لغات، بالخصوص سید احمد دہلوی کی ’فرہنگِ آصفیہ‘ اور نور الحسن نیر کی ’نور اللغات‘ کا خصوصی جائزہ لیا گیا ہے، جنھوں نے اردو کی کلاسیکی لغت نویسی کے فروغ میں نمایاں کردار ادا کیا۔ مزید برآں، اردو لغت بورڈ، کراچی کی تاریخی اصولوں پر مبنی 22 جلدوں پر مشتمل ’اردو لغت (تاریخی اصول پر)‘ کی تدوین کو اردو لغت نویسی کی تاریخ کا ایک اہم علمی سنگِ میل قرار دیا گیا ہے۔
