Abstract

This article outlines the historical evolution of Urdu linguistics, highlighting the limited early engagement of Urdu scholars in scientific linguistic inquiry compared to Western Orientalists. Siraj-ud-Din Ali Khan Arzoo is noted as the first to identify linguistic links between Urdu, Persian, and Sanskrit. Insha Allah Khan Insha’s Darya-e-Latafat is recognized as the first structured Urdu grammar with sociolinguistic insights.

Later scholars like Muhammad Hussain Azad, Syed Ahmad Dehlvi, and Mirza Sultan Ahmad expanded on linguistic issues. The development of Urdu grammar evolved through Arabic, Persian, and European influences, reaching a more scientific stage in the 20th century with contributions from Abdul Haq, Shaukat Sabzwari, Masood Hasan Khan, and Hafiz Mahmood Shirani.

The article concludes that early Urdu linguists focused more on literary and historical aspects than on direct engagement with Sanskrit or Indo-Aryan linguistic traditions.

یہ مضمون اردو لسانیات کی تاریخی ترقی کا جائزہ لیتا ہے، اور اس بات کو اجاگر کرتا ہے کہ ابتدائی دور میں اردو علما نے سائنسی لسانی تحقیق میں زیادہ دلچسپی نہیں لی، جب کہ مغربی مستشرقین سنسکرت پر گہرے مطالعے میں مصروف تھے۔ سراج الدین علی خان آرزو کو وہ پہلا مسلمان محقق قرار دیا گیا ہے جنہوں نے اردو، فارسی اور سنسکرت کے مابین لسانی ربط کو پہچانا۔

                           انشاء اللہ خاں انشاء کی تصنیف دریاے لطافت کو پہلی باقاعدہ اردو صرف و نحو کی کتاب تسلیم کیا گیا ہے، جو زبان کے سماجی و علاقائی پہلوؤں پر بھی روشنی ڈالتی ہے۔ بعد ازاں، محمد حسین آزاد، سید احمد دہلوی، اور مرزا سلطان احمد جیسے محققین نے اردو کے تاریخی اور عمومی لسانی مسائل پر کام کیا۔

                  اردو نحو کی ترقی عربی، فارسی اور یورپی اثرات سے ہوتے ہوئے بیسویں صدی میں ایک سائنسی بنیاد تک پہنچی، جس میں مولوی عبدالحق، ڈاکٹر شوکت سبزواری، ڈاکٹر مسعود حسن خاں، اور ڈاکٹر حافظ محمود شیرانی جیسے علما کا نمایاں کردار رہا۔
